Baby Proofing Essentials
Baby Proofing TimelineWhen to Childproof Your Home
Stay ahead of your curious baby. What to baby-proof at each stage, room-by-room checklists, and essential products.
Critical Reminder
Baby-proofing reduces risk but doesn't replace supervision. Accidents happen in seconds. The goal is layers of protection—supervision + baby-proofing + teaching safety.
Baby Proofing by Age
Before Baby (or 0-3 months)
Basic safety setup
- Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Set water heater to 120°F max
- Secure heavy furniture to walls
- Check crib meets safety standards
- Remove window blind cords or use cordless
Why now: Baby isn't mobile yet, but these basics prevent serious accidents.
3-6 months (Pre-Crawling)
Getting ahead of mobility
- Cover electrical outlets
- Install baby gates (at stairs)
- Move toxic plants out of reach
- Secure low cabinets with locks
- Remove small objects from floor level
- Pad sharp furniture corners
Why now: Babies become mobile faster than expected. Do this BEFORE they crawl.
6-9 months (Crawling)
Floor-level hazards
- Get on hands and knees—see their view
- Secure all cabinet latches
- Remove tablecloths (babies pull them)
- Cover garbage cans or secure behind doors
- Block access to pet food/water
- Check for choking hazards everywhere
Why now: They're exploring at floor level. Everything goes in their mouth.
9-12 months (Pulling Up/Cruising)
Climbing and reaching hazards
- Anchor all furniture to walls
- Move items off low tables
- Secure TV and heavy electronics
- Add toilet locks
- Check drawer latches work
- Gate off dangerous areas
Why now: They pull up on everything. Furniture tipping is a major risk.
12-18 months (Walking/Climbing)
Higher hazards now accessible
- Move chairs away from counters
- Secure oven with door lock
- Add stove knob covers
- Lock medicine cabinets higher up
- Check door handle locks work
- Secure lower bookshelves
Why now: They climb on chairs to reach things. Nothing is out of reach.
18-36 months (Toddler)
They figure things out
- Upgrade to toddler-resistant locks
- Secure door locks at adult height
- Add pool barriers if applicable
- Check garage door safety sensors
- Consider window guards for upper floors
- Talk about safety rules
Why now: They can defeat simple locks. They understand more but judgment is poor.

Common Baby Proofing Mistakes
Waiting until baby is mobile
Baby-proof BEFORE they crawl. You'll always be one step behind otherwise.
Only focusing on obvious hazards
Get on hands and knees to see their view. You'll spot hazards you missed.
Underestimating toddler abilities
Assume they can climb, reach, and figure out locks faster than expected.
Forgetting about guests' homes
Grandparents and babysitters need basic safety items too.
Not re-checking as they grow
Baby-proofing evolves. What worked at 6 months fails at 18 months.
