First Day of SchoolComplete Parent Guide

Prepare your child (and yourself) for the first day. Daycare, preschool, or kindergarten, everything you need for a successful start.

You've Got This

Every parent feels nervous about this milestone. It's okay to have big feelings too. Your child will pick up on your confidence, so take a deep breath and trust that they're more resilient than you think.

Preparation Timeline

1-2 Months Before

  • Visit the school if possible (open house, playground visit)
  • Read books about starting school
  • Practice the morning routine
  • Work on self-help skills (bathroom, opening lunch containers)
  • Talk positively about school

1-2 Weeks Before

  • Meet the teacher if possible
  • Walk or drive the route to school
  • Adjust sleep schedule to school times
  • Shop for supplies together
  • Practice separation at other times

Night Before

  • Lay out clothes and backpack
  • Pack lunch and snacks
  • Get to bed early
  • Keep the evening calm and low-key
  • Reassure but don't over-discuss

Day Of

  • Wake up with plenty of time
  • Eat a good breakfast
  • Take a first-day photo
  • Keep goodbye short and positive
  • Trust the teachers

Managing Separation Anxiety

Keep goodbyes short

Long, drawn-out goodbyes increase anxiety. Quick hug, confident 'I love you, see you later!' and go.

Create a goodbye ritual

Special handshake, two kisses, a phrase you say. Predictability is comforting.

Don't sneak out

Always say goodbye. Sneaking away breaks trust and increases anxiety long-term.

Project confidence

Kids read your emotions. If you seem anxious, they will be too. Fake it if needed.

Validate feelings

'It's okay to feel nervous. Lots of kids feel that way. You're going to be okay.'

Give them something of yours

A small photo, a drawn heart on their hand, or a 'hug button' they can press when they miss you.

What to Expect (The Honest Truth)

They might cry

This is normal and usually stops within minutes of you leaving. Teachers are experts at this.

They might be exhausted

School is mentally and socially tiring. Expect meltdowns after school for the first few weeks.

They might not tell you much

'What did you do today?' 'Nothing.' This is normal. Ask specific questions instead.

They might regress at home

Being 'good' at school is hard work. They may need to let it out with you. This is actually a compliment.

Adjustment takes time

Most kids settle in within 2-4 weeks. Some take longer. Consistency is key.

Tips by School Type

Daycare/Childcare

6 weeks - 3 years

  • Bring comfort item from home
  • Expect transition period of 1-4 weeks
  • Start with shorter days if possible
  • Trust the caregivers' expertise
  • Crying at drop-off often stops quickly

Preschool

2.5 - 5 years

  • Practice being away from parents
  • Work on bathroom independence
  • Read books about preschool
  • Visit the classroom beforehand
  • Pack a family photo for their cubby

Kindergarten

5 - 6 years

  • Practice the full morning routine
  • Teach them their full name and your phone number
  • Practice opening their lunch containers
  • Walk through school day expectations
  • Attend orientation and meet the teacher

Better Questions Than "How Was School?"

"How was school?" usually gets "fine" or "I don't know." Try these specific questions instead:

  • Who did you sit with at lunch?
  • What was the funniest thing that happened?
  • Did anyone do something kind for you?
  • What was the hardest part of the day?
  • What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
  • Did you play with anyone at recess?
  • What did your teacher read/teach you?
  • Is there anything you're worried about?
