What is a healthy BMI for toddlers and young children?

For children ages 2-20, BMI is interpreted using age and sex-specific percentiles. Healthy ranges: 5th to 85th percentile is healthy weight; below 5th percentile is underweight; 85th to 95th percentile is overweight; 95th percentile and above is obese. Unlike adults, children's BMI naturally changes with age - it rises in infancy, falls during toddler years, and rises again around age 5-6 (adiposity rebound). A pediatrician should interpret results as growth patterns matter more than single measurements.

How do I know when my toddler is ready for potty training?

Most children are ready between 18-36 months. Key readiness signs: Physical - stays dry for 2+ hours, has regular bowel movements, can pull pants up/down; Cognitive - understands simple instructions, shows interest in the toilet, tells you when diaper is wet/dirty; Emotional - expresses desire to be 'big kid', shows discomfort with dirty diapers, can sit still for 2-5 minutes. Average potty training takes 3-6 months. Daytime training usually succeeds first; nighttime dryness may take months or years longer.

What developmental milestones should a 2-year-old reach?

By 24 months, most toddlers can: Language - speak 50+ words, combine 2 words ('want milk'), follow 2-step instructions; Motor - walk and run well, kick a ball, climb furniture, turn pages; Cognitive - sort shapes/colors, complete simple puzzles, engage in pretend play; Social - copy others, show more independence, parallel play with other children. Red flags: fewer than 15 words, no 2-word phrases, doesn't walk steadily, loss of previously learned skills. Each child develops at their own pace within a range.

How much sleep does a toddler need including naps?

Sleep recommendations by age: 12-18 months - 11-14 hours total (2 naps, transitioning to 1); 18-24 months - 11-14 hours total (usually 1 nap of 1-3 hours); 2-3 years - 11-13 hours total (1 nap until age 3-4); 3-5 years - 10-13 hours total (nap may phase out). Most toddlers transition from 2 naps to 1 between 12-18 months. Signs of the transition: fighting second nap, later bedtime, earlier wake-ups. Move to 1 nap gradually; ideal single nap is after lunch, 1-3pm.

What are normal growth patterns for toddlers?

Growth slows after age 1. Typical patterns: Weight - gains 4-6 lbs per year (ages 1-2), then 4-5 lbs/year until age 5; Height - grows 3-5 inches per year (ages 1-2), then 2.5-3 inches/year until puberty. By age 2, children reach about 50% of adult height. Growth should follow a consistent percentile curve - crossing percentile lines may warrant investigation. Between ages 1-3, appetite decreases as growth slows, which is normal. Focus on growth trends over time rather than individual measurements.

What activities support toddler development at each age?

12-18 months: stacking blocks (2-4 high), push/pull toys, ball rolling, reading board books, water play. 18-24 months: simple puzzles (3-4 pieces), crayons and paper, play dough, sand play, singing songs with actions. 2-3 years: tricycles, cutting with safety scissors, matching games, dress-up play, simple pretend play (kitchen, dolls). 3-4 years: balance activities, building with blocks, puzzles (12+ pieces), rhyming games, cooperative play. Aim for 3+ hours of physical activity daily and limit screen time to 1 hour of quality content.
