Infant Car Seat vs Convertible Car Seat
Portability for a year against one seat that lasts for years.
The short version
An infant seat clicks out of the car with the baby still in it, which matters enormously in the first months and not at all afterwards. A convertible stays in the car but lasts for years and skips a purchase. Buy the infant seat if you drive often and want to move a sleeping baby; buy the convertible if you want one seat and rarely need to carry the baby in it.

Choose the Chicco KeyFit Max ClearTex if…
You drive regularly and the thought of waking a sleeping newborn to unbuckle them fills you with dread. That is the entire argument for an infant seat and it is a strong one for the first several months.
Choose the Graco 4Ever DLX 4-in-1 if…
You want to buy once, you mostly walk or use transit, or the budget is tight. A convertible used rear-facing from birth is entirely legitimate and skips a whole purchase, at the cost of carrying the baby separately every time.

Common questions
How long should a child stay rear-facing?
As long as the seat allows, which with most convertibles is well past two years. Rear-facing is substantially safer in a frontal crash because it spreads the force across the whole back rather than the neck. Do not rush to turn them round.
Can I use a second-hand car seat?
Only if you know its full history and it is in date. Seats expire, typically six to ten years from manufacture, and any seat in a crash must be replaced. If you cannot verify both, do not use it.
Do I need a seat for the hospital?
Yes, if you are driving home. Most hospitals will not discharge you without one fitted. Install it and have it checked a few weeks before the due date rather than on the day.
