Is meal prepping cheaper than meal kits?

Yes, meal prepping is significantly cheaper. Home-cooked meals cost $4-8 per serving on average, while meal kits like HelloFresh cost $8-13 per serving. However, meal kits save time on planning and shopping, which has value depending on your hourly rate.

How much time does meal prepping take?

A typical weekly meal prep session takes 2-4 hours including planning, shopping, and cooking. Meal kits reduce this to about 30-45 minutes per meal since ingredients are pre-portioned and recipes are provided.

Do meal kits reduce food waste?

Yes, meal kits can reduce food waste by 20-40% since ingredients are pre-portioned for each recipe. Home cooking often leads to buying more than needed, especially for specialty ingredients used only once.

What are the startup costs for meal prepping?

Quality meal prep requires an initial investment in containers ($30-50 for a good set), possibly a slow cooker or Instant Pot ($60-100), and storage bags/wrap. These costs are recovered within a few weeks of savings versus meal kits.

Which is better for busy families?

It depends on your situation. Meal kits work better for families with limited time who value convenience and variety. Meal prepping works better for budget-conscious families who can dedicate a few hours weekly to cooking and have freezer space for batch cooking.
