FAQ
Hitch rack vs roof rack for a family?
Hitch racks are easier to load (waist-height instead of head-height), don't kill fuel economy, and don't crush kids' frames with the repeated lift-to-roof motion. For any family with 2+ bikes — especially kids bikes which are shorter — a hitch rack like the Thule Epos or Kuat Piston Pro X is the right default. Only go roof rack if your hitch receiver is already occupied by a cargo box or you have an unusual vehicle.
Will a hitch rack work for e-bikes?
Only if rated for e-bike weight. Kuat Piston ION and Thule Epos 2 are e-bike-rated (65+ lbs per bike). Most standard hitch racks handle up to 50-55 lbs and will break under e-bike weight. Check the weight rating before buying. Many families buy e-bike-rated now even without an e-bike — because they'll likely own one within 3 years.
1.25" vs 2" hitch receiver?
2" is standard on SUVs and trucks and supports higher weight (most 4-bike racks require 2"). 1.25" is on smaller cars and sedans and limits you to 2-bike racks. Check your vehicle's hitch spec before buying. Some racks (Kuat Piston Pro) ship with an adapter; most don't.
How do I lock bikes to the rack?
Almost all premium racks (Thule Epos, Kuat Piston Pro X, Yakima HoldUp) have built-in bike-tubing locks plus a hitch pin lock. For a family parking at a restaurant overnight, always use both. For longer stops (hotel overnight), take the bikes inside — any rack lock can be defeated with 5 minutes and a bolt cutter.
Can I add lights to a hitch rack?
The Thule Epos with Lights ($1,699) includes integrated brake + turn signal lights that plug into your vehicle's 4- or 7-pin wiring. For other racks, add a magnetic tow-light bar ($40-80 on Amazon). In many states, lights are required if the rack blocks your vehicle's tail lights.
