Evolur Aurora convertible crib review

A well-made full-size crib, and a clear account of what is not included in the price.

The verdict

The Aurora is a solid hardwood full-size crib with three mattress heights and third-party emissions screening, and it looks considerably more expensive than it is. Buy it if you want a crib that will still be furniture in ten years. Understand before you buy that the mattress is not included and neither are the parts that make the last two of the five conversions possible, which is true of almost every crib marketed this way.

What it does well

Where it falls short

What owners report

Published owner reviews are consistently positive about the finish and the apparent quality relative to price, and many owners comment that it looks more expensive than it is. Sturdiness once assembled draws few complaints.

The recurring criticisms are assembly time, occasional shipping damage on a large heavy item, and confusion about which conversion kits are and are not included. That last point is a category-wide problem rather than a fault with this crib.

Alternatives worth considering

Budget Pick

DaVinci Kalani 4-in-1 Convertible Crib, GREENGUARD Gold Certified

~$249

A very well-established convertible crib with GREENGUARD Gold certification for about a third of the price. Plainer to look at, and it does the same safety job, which is the part that actually matters.

Design Alternative

Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 Convertible Baby Crib

~$399

The mid-century crib that most nursery photographs are of, at a middle price. Three conversions rather than five, stated honestly, and a lower profile that suits a small room.

The Thing Not Included

Newton Baby Crib Mattress and Toddler Bed, Breathable and Washable

~$300

Listed because the crib does not come with a mattress and you cannot use it without one. Whichever mattress you choose, it must be firm, flat and a tight fit in the frame with no gap at the sides.

Common questions

Does a convertible crib come with the mattress?

Almost never, and this one does not. A crib mattress is a separate purchase of typically $150 to $300, and it is a safety item rather than a comfort one: it must be firm, flat and sized so there is no gap between the mattress and the frame.

What does 5-in-1 actually mean?

It counts the configurations the frame can be converted into, and some of those conversions need kits sold separately. Read the listing for which stages are included. This is standard marketing across the whole category and it is worth pricing the conversion you actually intend to use.

What is safe to put in a crib?

A firm, flat mattress and a tight-fitting sheet, and nothing else. No bumpers, pillows, quilts, loose blankets, soft toys or sleep positioners. The baby sleeps on their back. This is one of the clearest areas of consensus in infant safety guidance, and no product changes it.

When should we move to a toddler bed?

The usual trigger is a child climbing out of the cot, which is a fall risk, rather than a specific age. Our toddler bed rail versus floor bed comparison covers what happens next and how families handle the transition.

Is an expensive crib safer than a cheap one?

No. Every crib sold new in the United States has to meet the same federal safety standard, and drop-side cribs have been banned since 2011. What more money buys is materials, finish, longevity and looks. A $250 certified crib and a $700 certified crib are held to the same safety requirements.
