What size bike does a 5 year old need?

Most 5 year olds need a 16-inch wheel bike. The ideal bike size depends on your child's height (typically 42-48 inches at age 5) and inseam measurement. A proper fit means your child can touch the ground with their toes while seated and reach the handlebars comfortably.

How do I measure my child's inseam for a bike?

Have your child stand against a wall in bare feet with their legs slightly apart. Place a book spine-up between their legs as if it were a bike seat. Measure from the top of the book to the floor. This measurement in inches helps determine the correct bike standover height.

What are the standard kids bike sizes by wheel diameter?

Kids bike sizes are measured by wheel diameter: 12-inch for ages 2-4 (height 30-39 inches), 14-inch for ages 3-5 (height 37-44 inches), 16-inch for ages 4-6 (height 41-48 inches), 18-inch for ages 5-8 (height 45-54 inches), 20-inch for ages 6-10 (height 49-59 inches), and 24-inch for ages 9-12 (height 52-63 inches).

Should I buy a bigger bike for my child to grow into?

No, buying a bike that's too big is unsafe. An oversized bike makes it difficult for children to control, stop, and balance properly, increasing the risk of accidents. It's better to buy the correct size now and upgrade when needed. Many shops offer trade-in programs for growing children.

When should my child switch from training wheels to a balance bike?

Balance bikes are recommended for children ages 18 months to 4 years as a first bike. They help children learn balance and coordination more effectively than training wheels. Most children who start with balance bikes can transition directly to pedal bikes without training wheels by age 4-5.
