BOB Alterrain Pro review

A single jogging stroller with a brake you will use more than you expect, and a fold you will resent.

The verdict

The Alterrain Pro is the jogging stroller to buy if you actually run or walk hills, because the hand brake and the suspension are the two things cheaper strollers leave out and both matter on a descent. Buy it if your routes include gravel, trails or real gradients. Skip it if you jog on flat pavement, where a City Mini GT2 at less than half the price does almost everything this does.

What it does well

Where it falls short

What owners report

Published owner reviews are consistently strong on ride quality, the brake and durability, with many owners reporting years of use. A recurring and specific theme is that the hand brake gets used far more often than buyers expected, including by people who never intended to run.

The criticisms are size, weight and tyre maintenance, in that order. Very few owners criticise how it performs and most criticise where it fits, which is the same pattern across the whole BOB range.

Alternatives worth considering

Budget Pick

Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 All-Terrain Stroller

~$400

All-terrain wheels and a one-hand fold for less than half the price. No hand brake and a simpler suspension, which is the difference you feel on a hill and not on a pavement.

Value Alternative

Baby Jogger Summit X3 3-Wheel Jogging Stroller with Hand Brake

~$550

A hand brake and a jogging frame for about $280 less. The suspension is less sophisticated and the seat does not recline as far, so this is the pick if the brake was the feature you wanted.

Two-Child Alternative

BOB Gear Revolution Flex 3.0 Duallie Double Jogging Stroller

~$1,020

The same suspension philosophy carrying two children side by side. It is much wider, which is a doorway problem rather than a trail problem, so check your narrowest doorway first.

Common questions

Is a hand brake necessary on a jogging stroller?

On flat ground, no. On any real descent, yes, and it is the reason to pay more. Holding a loaded stroller back with your arms on a long hill is how people lose control of one, and a friction brake removes that entirely. Owners consistently report using it more than they expected.

BOB Alterrain Pro vs City Mini GT2?

The BOB has a hand brake, better suspension and a further recline. The GT2 costs less than half and folds smaller. If you run on trails or hills, buy the BOB. If you jog on pavement and want a stroller that fits your boot, buy the GT2.

When can my baby ride in a jogging stroller?

Not as a newborn while running. The usual guidance is that a child should be able to sit unsupported with good head and neck control first, often quoted from around six to eight months, with the manufacturer's manual setting its own limit. With a compatible infant car seat and adapter you can walk with it earlier. Confirm with your paediatrician.

How much maintenance do air-filled tyres need?

Check pressures every few weeks and expect a puncture eventually. Keep a pump and a spare tube. An underinflated pneumatic tyre pushes badly, wears unevenly and is the most common cause of a stroller that suddenly feels heavy.

Will it fit in my car?

Measure the published folded dimensions against your boot with the parcel shelf in place. Self-standing is useful for storage and says nothing about volume. This is the most predictable regret with any full-size jogging stroller.
