Veer All-Terrain Cruiser review

A wagon that pushes like a stroller, and the venues that will turn you away at the gate.

The verdict

The Cruiser is the wagon that behaves like a stroller, which is what separates it from the folding wagons sold beside it, and being hose-washable is a feature you will be grateful for within a month. Buy it if your weekends are beaches, trails, sports fields and campsites. Skip it if your main use case is theme parks, because many of the largest ban wagons outright, or if you need something for a newborn, which this is not without a separate infant accessory.

What it does well

Where it falls short

What owners report

Published owner reviews are consistently strong on build quality and on how well it handles sand, grass and gravel, which is the specific reason people buy it over a cheaper folding wagon. The push mode and the hose-washable body come up repeatedly as the two features that justified the price.

The recurring criticisms are price and accessory cost, weight when lifting it into a car, and a steady stream of reports from people who discovered a venue would not admit it. That last one is entirely avoidable with a check beforehand.

Alternatives worth considering

More Seats, Less Money

WonderFold W4 Original Stroller Wagon, 4 Seater

~$499

Four seats rather than two, for about $200 less, with a zippered front door children can climb through. It is heavier and does not push as cleanly, so this is capacity over quality of movement.

Bike Alternative

Burley Encore X 2-Seat Bike Trailer and Stroller

~$700

The same money carrying the same two children, attached to a bicycle instead. If your outings are cycle rides rather than walks, the trailer covers far more ground.

One-Child Alternative

Thule Urban Glide 3 Single Child All-Terrain Stroller

~$800

If you have one child, a proper all-terrain stroller is narrower, easier indoors, and welcome at venues that turn wagons away. It carries far less gear, which is the trade.

Common questions

Are wagons allowed at theme parks?

Often not. Several of the largest parks ban wagons and wagon-style strollers regardless of how they steer, and the policies are usually written specifically about wagons. Check the current published policy for the venue you are visiting before buying, because this is the single most common expensive surprise with this product.

Veer Cruiser vs a stroller: which should I buy?

A stroller if your journeys are pavements, shops and public transport. A wagon if they are grass, sand, gravel and long days out with a lot of gear. The Cruiser is unusual in doing the wagon job while still pushing like a stroller, but it is still wide and still a weekend vehicle.

Can a baby ride in the Veer Cruiser?

Not as sold. An infant needs a lie-flat surface or an infant car seat, which means a separate Veer accessory. Budget for it if you are buying before your child can sit up reliably, and follow the accessory's own age and weight limits.

How heavy is it to lift into a car?

Veer publishes 32.6 lb, or 24.6 lb with the wheels off. That is lighter than many single strollers, and it is still a two-handed lift into a high boot. Taking the wheels off is quick and makes a real difference.

Is it worth it over a $150 folding wagon?

On flat ground and pavement, no. On sand, grass, gravel and roots, the difference is the whole product. Cheap folding wagons have small hard wheels and a soft frame, and they bog down and twist exactly where you wanted a wagon. If your use is a driveway and a park path, save the money.
