FAQ

PFD vs life jacket — are they the same?

Yes. "PFD" (Personal Flotation Device) is the formal term the US Coast Guard uses. "Life jacket" is colloquial. The PFDs in this guide are all USCG Type III approved — meaning certified for kids and appropriate for calm/moderate water. Type II is for open water with rescue expected; Type I is offshore. Type III is what families actually use.

How much wetsuit thickness does my kid need?

2mm / spring-suit: summer pool + warm water beach days (75°F+ water). 3/2mm: cool ocean/lake water (62-72°F). 4/3mm: cold ocean surfing (55-62°F). Kids chill faster than adults — go one step warmer than you would for yourself.

Full suit vs shorty vs Farmer John?

Full suit (long arms + legs) = maximum warmth for surfing/diving. Shorty (short arms + short legs) = warm-water pool/beach. Farmer John (no sleeves, long legs) = paddling where you need arm mobility. Pick based on activity: surf = full/shorty; kayak = Farmer John + splash top; beach = shorty or rashguard only.

Rashguard or wetsuit top — which does my kid need?

Rashguard (lycra) = sun protection and abrasion protection, no warmth. Wetsuit top = warmth + abrasion. For typical pool/beach days under sun, rashguard is enough. For cooler water (<72°F) or longer sessions, add a wetsuit top or a splash top for paddlers.

What size PFD does my kid need?

PFDs are sized by weight, not chest. Infant: 8-30 lbs. Child: 30-50 lbs. Youth: 50-90 lbs. Adult: 90+ lbs. For all USCG types, the weight rating is printed inside the PFD. Get the right size — a PFD that's too big rides up over the face in water, too small doesn't float them.
