Buying Guide

1. Width beats length for family stability

A 32"+ wide board is dramatically more stable than a 30" touring board, especially with kids on deck. For learning adults or parent+kid paddling, prioritize 32-34" width over long length.

2. Inflatable vs hardboard

Inflatable: packs into a car trunk, easier storage, softer falls. Hardboard: better performance, faster, more responsive. For families without garage space, inflatable. For families with storage and serious paddling ambitions, hardboard.

3. PFDs are required

US Coast Guard requires every SUP rider to have a PFD on board (may be a belt-style on adults, kids must wear it). Don't skip this.

4. Get a leash

A 10' coiled leash keeps the board from floating away after a fall. Essential safety gear โ€” already included on most quality boards.

FAQ

At what age can kids start paddleboarding?

As a passenger on a parent's board: age 2+ (sitting up front, wearing a PFD). Solo on a kid-sized board: age 6-8 with supervised swim ability. Most kids are paddling independently by age 10.

Inflatable vs hardboard SUP for families?

Inflatable: packs into a bag (great for families without garage storage), more forgiving on falls, lighter to carry. Hardboard: faster, better tracking, more responsive. For family recreational use, inflatable wins on practicality. For serious paddlers, hardboard.

What size paddleboard for a family?

10-11 feet for a single adult. 11-12 feet for parent+kid. 12+ feet for large adults or parent+two kids. Width matters more than length for stability โ€” 32"+ wide boards are much more stable for kids than 30" touring boards.

BOTE vs NRS โ€” which is better for families?

BOTE: better aesthetics, mass-market appeal, wider variety of accessories. NRS: river-running heritage, more durable construction, better for rivers/rapids. For lakes + flatwater: BOTE. For mixed conditions: NRS.
