woom GO 3 review

A first pedal bike that a four year old can actually pick up, and why the price is less mad than it looks.

The verdict

The GO 3 weighs about 13 lb, and on a bike for a four year old that single number does more for learning than anything else on the specification sheet. Buy it if you want the first pedal bike to be the one they actually ride. Skip it if your child is between sizes, because fit is decided by inseam and not by age, and the wrong size woom is worse than the right size cheap bike.

What it does well

Where it falls short

What owners report

Published owner reviews are unusually consistent for a children's product: the weight is what people mention, and many describe a child moving from a heavy bike to this one and riding confidently within a day. Build quality and the brake levers draw repeated praise.

The recurring criticisms are price and sizing. A meaningful share of negative reviews are from buyers who ordered by age rather than by inseam and received a bike their child could not ride yet, which the manufacturer's own guidance warns about.

Alternatives worth considering

The Step Before

woom GO 1 Balance Bike for Toddlers 18 Months to 3.5 Years, 12 inch

~$249

Balance comes before pedalling, and a child who has learned to balance usually transfers to pedals in an afternoon. If your child is not there yet, this is the correct purchase and the GO 3 can wait.

Smaller Size

woom GO 2 Bicycle for Children 3 to 4.5 Years, 14 inch

~$459

The same bike one size down, for a shorter inseam. Buy by the measurement rather than the age, because a bike that fits now is ridden and a bike bought to grow into is not.

For the Younger Sibling

Burley Encore X 2-Seat Bike Trailer and Stroller

~$700

Included because family rides usually involve a child who rides and one who cannot yet. A trailer keeps the whole family on the same outing rather than splitting it.

Common questions

Is a woom bike worth the money?

The case rests on weight and resale. A 13 lb bike is far easier for a small child to control than a 25 lb one, and that shows up as confidence rather than as a specification. Resale on the brand is strong, so the cost over two years is lower than the sticker. If the bike will barely be ridden, none of that applies and a cheaper bike is fine.

What size woom does my child need?

Measure the inseam, standing, in the shoes they will ride in, and match it to the published range. The GO 3 fits an inseam of 19.1 to 25.2 inches. Age ranges are a rough guide and children of the same age vary enormously. Our kids bike size calculator will get you to a starting size.

woom vs Strider: which first?

They are different stages. Strider makes balance bikes, and a woom GO 3 is a pedal bike. Balance first, pedals second, and that order makes learning faster. Our woom versus Strider comparison covers where each one fits.

Do these bikes have training wheels?

They are not designed around them, and the modern approach skips them. A child who learns balance first and then adds pedals usually rides sooner than one who learns to pedal upright on stabilisers and then has to learn balance afterwards.

What else do I need to buy?

A correctly fitted helmet, which is not optional. Fit it level on the head, snug enough that it does not move when the child shakes their head, with straps forming a V under each ear. Replace any helmet after an impact even if it looks fine.
