FAQ
What deck width for my kid?
Age 5-7: 7.0" or smaller (mini cruiser sizes). Age 8-10: 7.25"-7.5". Age 11-13: 7.5"-7.75". Age 13+ (and wider-footed kids): 7.75"-8.0". Deck width is the single most important fit factor — too wide and the kid physically cannot pop the board, too narrow and they outgrow it in months.
Skateboard vs cruiser vs longboard — which does my kid want?
Skateboard = street and park tricks, ollies, rails. Harder to balance initially. Cruiser = getting from A to B, neighborhood riding. Easier to balance thanks to soft wheels. Longboard = longer distance cruising, downhill. Usually teens. If the kid wants to copy YouTube tricks, they want a skateboard. If they want transportation, cruiser.
Complete vs build-it-yourself?
For ages 6-12, always complete. Building a custom setup ($40 deck + $35 trucks + $20 wheels + $15 bearings + grip tape + hardware) costs more than a decent complete and you have no warranty. Once a kid is 14+ and committed, custom builds from a local skate shop are worthwhile — they'll tune truck bushings to the kid's weight.
Does Backcountry sell skateboards?

What safety gear does my kid need?
Absolute minimum: helmet. For a skateboard (not cruiser), add wrist guards and knee pads. Bell Sidetrack, Triple 8 Sweatsaver, and Pro-Tec Classic all make good kids' skate helmets. For a toddler on a cruiser, a regular bike helmet is enough. Kids who go to skate parks should have full pads.
