FAQ

What size snowboard for my kid?

General rule: the board should come up between the chin and nose when stood on end. Age 3-5 = 85-95cm, age 5-7 = 100-115cm, age 7-10 = 115-130cm, age 10-12 = 130-140cm, age 12-14 = 140-150cm, age 14+ = 150-155cm. Weight matters more than height at the older ages — a small 13-year-old should size down, a tall 10-year-old can size up.

Does the brand of binding need to match the board?

No — modern 4x2 / 4x4 disc bindings fit virtually all kid snowboards. Burton Channel boards need Burton EST bindings (or an EST-compatible re-entry disc). Any Nitro, Capita, Salomon, Jones, Rome, Yes. board works with any standard binding.

Should my kid ride regular or goofy?

Have them run toward a slippery floor (like in socks) and see which foot they lead with. That's their front foot. Regular = left foot forward, Goofy = right foot forward. About 65% of kids are regular. It's very hard to switch later, so figure it out early and stick with it.

When is a kid ready for their own board vs renting?

Once they've had 8-10 days riding (usually by second season if you ski a lot, third season if you're occasional), the jump in performance from decent rental to even entry-level owned gear is huge. Rental boards are beat-up and detuned; owned boards hold an edge and turn responsively.

Does Backcountry carry Burton Riglet/After School?

Yes — Backcountry stocks Burton Smalls and some Burton Process/Bullet Jr models. Riglet (toddler) can be harder to find in stock; we sometimes route those to Amazon. Check the live page for current stock — the buttons default to the Burton product page if BC has it.
