FAQ

Rooftop tent or ground tent, which is better for families?

Rooftop tents set up in under a minute, keep you off damp ground, and deter critters/bears. But they sleep 2-4 people max (annex tents expand to 4-6), cost $1,500+, and require a capable roof rack. For families of 5+: go ground tent (Wawona 8). For families of 2-4 who overland: rooftop is transformative.

Will my car carry a rooftop tent?

Any vehicle with a roof rack rated for 150+ lbs static load works. That's most SUVs and mid-size trucks. Subcompact cars usually fall short. Check your vehicle's dynamic load limit (driving) and static load limit (stopped, much higher). Dynamic covers the trip, static supports you sleeping up there.

Hard shell vs soft shell rooftop tent?

Hard shell (iKamper Skycamp, Thule Basin Wedge): sets up in 60 seconds, aerodynamic when closed, pricier ($3,000+). Soft shell (Yakima SkyRise, Thule Approach): 5-minute setup, bigger interior, cheaper ($2,000-2,500). For road warriors stopping for a night at a time: hard shell. For a destination campsite: soft shell is fine.

How cold-weather capable are these?

The 3-season versions (Thule Approach, ROAM Vagabond 3-Season) are rated for 25°F+ with a sleeping bag. 4-season versions (Yakima SkyPeak HD, Yakima SkyRise HD 4-season) handle winter camping with snow load tested. For year-round overlanders: spend up for 4-season.

Can I leave it on my car year-round?

You can, but expect 2-3 MPG fuel economy loss and increased wind noise. Many overlanders leave the tent on during peak season (May-October) and remove it in winter to save fuel. Thule and Yakima tents have quick-release brackets for easier removal.
