Order early for the holidays; popular items sell out around Black Friday. Bikes ship in large boxes and most need some assembly, so leave time to build it before the big day.
Get the size right first
- Use the inseam, not the age. For a new rider, the bike's lowest seat height should be at or a little under the child's inseam.
- Rough guide: balance bike from about 18 months, 12-inch pedal bike for ages 2 to 4, 16-inch for 4 to 6, 20-inch for 5 to 8.
- Between sizes? Size down. A bike that is too big is harder to control and stop.
- Not sure? Our kids bike size calculator works from age, height and inseam.
The big gift: a first pedal bike (ages 2 to 8)
Our tested partner pick leads this tier: we built it and our own daughter learned to pedal on it. The premium picks from our Best Kids Bikes roundup follow.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best first bike gift for a 2-year-old?
A balance bike. At two, most children are not ready for pedals, and a balance bike teaches the hard part of riding, balance, first. Check that the lowest seat height is at or just under the child's inseam so they can sit with both feet flat on the ground.
Should I buy a bike one size up so it lasts longer?
No. An oversized bike is harder to control and stop, and a child who cannot put their feet down will not want to ride it. Buy the size that fits now. Most kids bikes have a wide seat-height range, so a correctly sized bike still gives a season or two of growth.
How do I get the size right for a surprise gift?
Ask a parent for the child's inseam, or measure a pair of their pants that fit well from crotch to hem. Compare it with the bike's minimum seat height: for a new rider the lowest seat setting should be at or a little under the inseam. If you only know the age, use our kids bike size calculator and size down if the child is between sizes.
Balance bike or pedal bike for a 3-year-old?
If they have never ridden, a balance bike. If they have already been gliding confidently on a balance bike, a 12-inch pedal bike is the natural next step. Many 3-year-olds are right on the boundary, so the inseam, not the age, decides it.
What should I give with a bike?
A helmet that fits. Kids should wear one on every ride from the very first. Size it to the child's head circumference, and check the fit dial and straps when the bike is handed over. A bell and knee pads are nice extras.
